  • Offence is no criticism

    Did van Gogh just crticise the practice of some Muslims with women? Is offending their religion, ridiculing what is sacred to all Muslims, the way to criticise? There is, after all, a difference between criticism and offence! Christians should be in a better position to enter into dialogue with Muslims, and criticise when necessary than post-Christian secularists, also for the following reason. A religion, that can remember its own distortions of its own sacred texts, can have a better understanding, and could better encourage Muslims to make the necessary corrections while remaining faithful to their roots, than a non-religious outsider who remembers and understands nothing, and even confuses criticism and freedom of speech with offensive ridicule..   • Evangelical zealots and whingeing secularists

    Is the West facing opposite cultural dangers in USA and in Europe? The need to oppose a totalitarian threat - the Nazis or the Communists - at almost any cost, leads to some strange bedfellows in the "anti" camp. There were Christians and Communists, conservatives and socialists in the anti-Nazi camp, and there were Christians and free thinkers, patriots and internationalists, democrats and traditionalists in the anti-Communist camp. The recent ideological extravaganza of the neocons - notably after the ill fated Iraq war - lumps together into one anti-camp some unlikely, and practically incompatible, groups, like anti-war Christians, together with anti-establishment old leftists of the Seventies' breed, together with intolerant anti-Christian European secularists. The forces keeping these groups together are, of course, not as strong as those in the previous two cases, first of all, because the outside pressure is not nearly as threatening. Nevertheless, I think there is some analogy in the situations.
  • Buttiglione and the spectre of secularism in the European Union

    Rocco Buttiglione, a lawyer, administrative judge and committed Catholic, was the main reason why the EU President designate J. M. Barroso had to withdraw his twenty five candidates for the EU Commission. The "old" European secularists rightly object to religious societies (e.g. Islamic, or medieval Christian) where this distinction between adherence to law and personal opinions or rules of conduct is not being made. However, they themselves do not want to recognise this distinction between crime and sin (a term meaningless to non-religious). Comparison with John F. Kerry's dilema.   • Kontroverzie s kopftuchom a čo s tým súvisí

    Kopftuch je nemecký názov pre šatku všeobecne a konkrétne pre šatku ktorú nosia niektoré turecké ženy ako prejav ich muslimského vierovyznania. Kontroverzie, ktoré vznikli v Nemecku o tom či povoliť alebo nie ich nosenie u štátnych zamestnaniek, treba vidieť v širšom kontexte spoločenského zviditeľňovania náboženstva, vrátane kresťanského. A tu sme s muslimami v jednom vreci zoči-voči zosekularizovanému štátu. Lebo dnešná (západná) Európa, ak odmyslíme muslimské prisťahovalectvo, je nielen post-kresťanská, ale aj post-náboženská. Neslobodno podľahnúť pokušeniu vidieť súčasné kultúrne a iné problémy ako problém huntingtonovskej zrážky civilizácií, či ešte horšie, ako súboj kresťanstva s islamom, lebo tí ktorí chcú kresťanom vnucovať takýto pohľad na svetové konflikty nekonajú v záujme ani kresťanstva ani islamu
  • Znovuzrodenie kresťanstva?

    Európski kresťania prechádzajú krízou, jednotlivci i národy. Možno to vidieť ako "pôrodné bolesti" potrebné k tomu, aby sa kresťanstvo mohlo vymaniť či vyliahnuť zo svojej úzkej európskej ulity v ktorej dozrievalo po necelé dve tisícročia, keď Západ predstavoval viac-menej jedinú "civilizovanú" kultúru. Sv. Augustín nám v mnohom môže poslúžiť svojím odkazom. On, hoci kultúrne príslušník rozkladajúceho sa Ríma, nenariekal s civilizovanými pohanmi nad jeho zánikom, ale ani škodoradostne nejasal s novými barbarmi. Jeho nostalgia za starým a obavy z nového boli akoby posvätené jeho kresťanstvom. Takto sa nostalgia stáva úctou k tradíciam a obavy nádejou.
  • Antisemitizmus versus Antijudaizmus

    Písaná slovenčina rozoznáva medzi židom (vierovyznanie) a Židom (národnosť, rasa). Antisemitizmus je post-kresťanským hriechom, bol či je namierený proti všetkým Židom a nemá s kresťanstvom v skutočnosti nič spoločného; na druhej strane antijuadizmus bol kresťanským hriechom, bol namierený iba proti židom, teda iba Židom, ktorí neuznávali Ježiša za Mesiáša.
  • Národ - prežitok minulosti?

    Rozdiel medzi etnickým a politickým pojmom národ; prvý je bežnejší v Strednej Európe, druhý v Západnej. Európske zjednocovanie (EU) a globalizáciu skôr prežijú národy v prvom, kultúrnom a nie druhom, mocenskom, slova zmysle. Národná prílušnosť však nebude už exkluzívnou kultúrno-etnickou charkteristikou jednotlivca. "Globalizovaný" človek bude pociťovať afinitu s viacerými etnikami, pravda s rôznou intenzitou, kde jedna bude absolútne prevládať, aj keď nie nutne u každého.
  • Dve politické kultúry

    Politickú postmodernu na západe už nemožno natoľko charakterizovať delením na pravicu a ľavicu. Viac informácií poskytuje rozlišovanie politických orientácií odvodených z dvoch legálnych tradícií, ktorých jadrami sú právo všeobecné (spoločenské, ius commune) a právo občianske (civilné, ius civile). Pritom anglo-americká tradícia sa viac prikláňa k prvej, kontinentálne európska viac k druhej. Toto ale nemožno vidieť ako čierno-biele delenie, skôr ako dva komplementárne prístupy k tej istej politicko-právnej filozófii.
  • Can religion handle cultural changes, as mathematics did it for physics?

    What points of view can one think of that make cultural changes comprehensible (to an individual or to a whole community) in the way mathematics made - and still makes - comprehensible conceptual changes in physics? In particular, could religion, or rather something that is based on religion as we know it, fulfill this function?

    Clifford Geertz's anthropological definition sees culture, and most importantly religion, as "an historically transmitted pattern of meanings embodied in symbols, a system of inherited conceptions expressed in symbolic form by means of which men communicate, perpetuate, and develop their knowledge about and attitudes towards life". Also a model is "a set of symbols whose relations to one another model relations among entities, processes or what-have-you in physical, organic, social or psychological systems by 'paralleling', 'imitating', or 'simulating' them". Thus a model, even more than a symbol on its own, can be seen as a pointer towards something unattainable and unmanageable directly, be it a mathematical model pointing towards physical reality or a religious model pointing towards reality reflected in the human condition.

    One investigates the possibility of religion (or other cultural systems) playing a role in handling cultural changes similar to that played by mathematics in handling ground breaking changes in physics at the beginning of the last century. It is argued that this analogy can be carried only along psychological levels, as a mitigating agent that can help an individual to 'understand' the changes, to a lesser extent along societal or communal levels, and probably with no implications for an 'objective' evaluation of the paradigm shift. So one has a whole set of (competing or complementing each other) systems from where the symbols for models of the human condition are taken - in distinction to a unique mathematics used to model the world of physics and its changes.

  • Caught in negativism and relativism: Our cultural heritage in a crisis

    By "our cultural" or "Western" heritage I mean the Christian heritage as a whole (i.e. not only its religious component) which has its rational roots in the Greek, Hellenic, world, its moral roots in Judaism and in more recent times it embraces a great variety of world-view orientations or paradigms, beginning with Enlightenment and perhaps ending with post-modernism.

    The contemporary crisis in western thinking and its cultural self-assertion - whether real or just imagined - can be traced down to two "threats":

    (a) external: given by demographic changes, the necessary immigration of carriers of 'foreign', i.e. non-Western cultures ;
    (b) internal: given by a negativist attitude to its own traditions, from the interpretation of its ethnic or national histories up to the most basic pillars of rational thinking, including post-modernist attacks on philosophical foundation of science.

    The second threat is more dangerous because it leads to a cultural decay of the Western world rending it unable to conduct a meaningful dialogue with external partners. Partners, whose share of the population is increasing all the time. Partners with a self-assured world-outlook of its political and intellectual leaders.

    The problem is, how to preserve the preservable from our heritage, including the question of whether such an effort is it worth at all. Can it survive as an important and respected progenitor of the new non-trivial globalised culture, as a core of something capable of further development and at the same time critical of post-modern irrationalism and other latter-day delusions? Certainly not as the norm to which other cultures should be subjected. That would be a fossilised conservatism, trying to clench desperately to things from the past. Thus neither a rigid conservation of our historical identity, nor a loss of historical continuity. Because, borrowing from botany, neither a fossilised nor an uprooted plant can be considered as having survived; though in the latter case the actual decay might take some time to make the plant completely rot away.

    The purpose of the present essay is an attempt to formulate the problem as coherently as possible, and to indicate the need, even urgency, to do something about it. If anything, I try to argue against a laisser-faire attitude leading to a 'jungle of cultures' where the stronger eats the weaker, the artificial silicon-chip-based culture asphyxiates the culture with traditional roots, where commercial interests hand-in-hand with 'political correctness' dictate moral values, where money behind the media decides which view is legitimate and deserves support, where refined psychological methods of coercion mould the conformist and discourage the non-conformist, etc.

    No 'solution' is proposed here, however, in papers to follow, I shall 'gaze into conceivable futures', and look at some aspects of possible solutions.

  • The two smokescreens obscuring the real meaning of the Clinton-Monica affair

    Two 'smokescreens' used to obscure the whole affair:
    (1) Unnecessary and distasteful sexual details with their moralistic implications (poor "betrayed" Hillary), and
    (2) Legalistic nitpicking (perjury or no perjury, impeach or not impeach).

    What is being forgotten in the heap of 'salacious details' around Monica and the cigar is the context in which the whole brouhaha started: the charge of 'sexual harassment' (now more or less an established fact) by Paula Jones. ...

    The charge of 'sexual harassment' -- often referring to situations in which the over-courageous or over-cheeky perpetrator can loose his job and which in the past would probably have been dealt with by a loud "Stop it!" or perhaps a very public slap in the face -- is an achievement of the 'progressive' ideological camp. Its application becomes objectionable only if it is guided by feminist zealotry and not by common sense...

    Even from a common sense point of view, not to mention the feminist zeal, Clinton's behaviour to both Paula and Monica was far beyond those which usually cost the perpetrator his job and often also public respect.

  • Multikultúra: jej etnická (národná) a náboženská a dimenzia

    Multikultúra - existencia a interakcia viacerých historicky viac či menej odlišných kultúr v spoločenskom priestore (štáte) ktorý bol predtým monokultúrny - je nepopierateľný a neodvrátiteľný fakt daný globalizáciou, demografickými zmenami atď, aj keď v inej forme a ináč vnímaný a prijímaný "väčšinovým obyvateľstvom" napríklad v Austrálii a ináč v Nemecku. Európa - aspoň teda jej západná časť - si postupom času viac a viac začína uvedomovať svetonázorovú jalovosť národnostných, v etnickom či politickom slova zmysle, rozbrojov, ktoré viedli k dvom svetovým vojnám. Na druhej strane, medzi tromi na európskej pôde súťažiacimi "náboženstvami" - kresťanstvo, islam a sekulárny humanizmus - jestvuje ešte veľa antagonizmov živených ich extrémnymi krídlami. Kresťanstvo - a azda katolicizmus predovšetkým - stojí v istom zmysle medzi islamom a sekulárnym humanizmom. Môže pôsobiť ako stabilizačný faktor, aj keď je kvantitatívne ešte stále na ústupe.   • Viera na Slovensku a v západnej Európe

    Zo spoločenského, ekonomického a politického hľadiska je Slovensko ešte stále na tom horšie ako západná Európa, čo sa však týka náboženského života - obzvlášť katolíckeho - sú tí na Slovensku na tom oveľa lepšie ako na Západe a tu sa má zasa západná Európa veľa čo učiť. Čo Slovensku ešte chýba je niečo ako psychologicko-vedecký pancier, intelektuálne dospenie ich viery ako svetský prostriedok vo zmysle "človeče pomôž si aj Pán Boh ti pomôže", aby nedopadli tak ako zapoadoeurópski kresťania až budú prechádzať (ak už neprechádzajú) podobným krízovým obdobím, keď jedni stratia vieru a iní ju prežívajú v emocionálne zdeformovaných, od rozumu odtrhnutých, sektárskych prejavoch.

  • Tretia slovenská cesta

    Written on the eve of the birth of the independent Slovak Republic on 1st January 1993 (and published later in Literarny Tyzdennik in July 1994), the paper is trying to define the "third way of Slovak cultural orientation" based on its own pro-western traditions, dependent on -- but also influnced by -- German and Hungarian contributions. Here the "first way" was the Havel-mediated pro-western orientation via Prague and Czechoslovak apriorism, whereas the "second way" is the nationalist narcissism leading to isolation not only politically but also culturally.
  • Slovak-Hungarian relations: past, present and future

    An abbreviated version of a talk at the Hungarian Institute in Melbourne, later also published in EUROPA ETHNICA (Salzburg, April 1990). An attempt to give an interpretation of the slogan "Magyarország nem volt, hanem lesz " that could be acceptable to many, if not all, Slovaks. Of a Hungary whose greatness is first of all in its cultural and spiritual achievements and contribution to the Christian civilisation, rather than in the size of the territory it controls. One cannot undo the political Trianon, but one can prevent a cultural and spiritual Trianon. And this prevention is in the interest of all Central Europeans, including Slovaks.

    The rational basics (presuppositions or axioms) of the faith of an educated Catholic (living in the 21st century post-Christian West) are explained in the form of "a letter to my daughter". These presuppositions (or beliefs) are presented in a telescoping sequence of FOUR STEPS: Step 1 is a rejection of the belief that all reality is reducible to the material; Step 2 is the theist assumption that there is a God (Yahweh, Allah)-Creator with characteristics of a caring person; Step 3 is the Christian position about this God; Step 4 covers the Roman Catholic understanding of Christianity.
  • "Matematické myšlienky" o metafyzike a (katolíckom) kresťanstve

    1. Matematické kvalifikácie sú dnes potrebné pre filozofické syntézy (filozofické 'teórie všetkého'), ktoré sú bez metafyziky a modernej filozófie prírodných vied nemysliteľné. Tu ide, pravda, o kvalifikácie vo zmysle hĺbkového chápania základných pojmov a vzťahov, a nie vo zmysle manipulatívneho ovládania a aplikovania ako u inžiniera. 2. Kresťanstvo sa musí snažiť príliš neoddialiť od nadšenia a zápalu prvých kresťanov, ale tiež nesmie pridlho stáť stranou od súčasného vývoja, vyčkávajúc opatrne ktoré z ideových novôt sa ukážu trvalým prínosom a ktoré iba bláznivou prechodnou módou. 3. Ako pre dieťa je rodič exkluzívnou autoritou a keď dospeje tak už iba privilegovanou autoritou, platí to vari podobne aj pre vzťah katolíka k učiteľskému úradu Cirkvi. Morálne dilemy spočívajú v často neľahkom napätí medzi príkazom cirkevnej autority a hlasom svedomia, ktoré vychádza z partikulárnosti danej situácie. Hlas môjho svedomia mi vo výnimočných prípadoch môže radiť obísť príkaz z autority, neoprávňuje ma to ale k tomu, aby som to isté radil inému už aj preto nie, lebo ja sa nemôžem bezo zbytku vžiť do mimoriadnosti jeho situácie. Preto viac sa proti katolíckej morálke prehrešuje ten, kto proti cirkevnej autorite agituje, ako ten, kto cirkevný príkaz v danej, pre neho ťažkej, situácii poruší.
  • Pastieri a mudrci

    Vianočná úvaha z roku 1986: Pred Slovom, ktoré telom sa stalo, kľačali - ako viacmenej i dnes - predovšetkým jednoduchí ľudia, ktorým zvesť oznámil priamo anjel Boží a potom - s istým časovým odstupom - ľudia učení, ktorí vedia "čítať znamenia". Vtedy tým znamením bola hviezda na nebi, dnes tie znamenia vieme vidieť v prírode, v dejinách ľudstva alebo v tom, čím sa zaoberá psychológia. Kto si nevie takto pokľaknúť - a o nich Písmo sväté aj mlčí - sú a boli ľudia príliš rozumove založení na to "aby počuli hlas anjela", ale súčasne aj príliš pohodlní, cynickí a pragmaticky založení. Preto ani "zbytočne nefilozofujú" nad zmyslom života.

Myšlienkový konzervatizmus abstraktný ako životná filozófia pozostáva z (i) princípu zachovania kontinuity skrze pojítko či pojítka na abstraktnej, vyššej úrovni, aj keď vonkajší, viditeľný prechod zo starého na nové sa môže zdať veľmi revolučný; (ii) postoja rešpektu k starému, aj tých jeho prejavov a zložiek, ktoré po dobrom uvážení treba považovať za vývojom prekonané, lebo aj tie boli resp. sú potrebné pre zrod nového. Inšpirácie z filozófie prírodných vied (fyziky). .
  • Tri platformy na ktorých jednotlivec kontaktuje vonkajší svet

    Pokus o teoretické rozvinutie a rôzne aplikácie životnej filozófie môjho otca. Ide tu o platformy, sféry či zorné uhly: estetický, racionálny a morálny, odpovedajúce aristelovským normám krásy, pravdy a dobra, ktorými reaguje mysliaci jednotlivec na vonkajší svet: zážitok, poznanie a konanie. Tu, pravda, zážitok má dimenziu estetickú, poznanie racionálnu a konanie morálnu. Aj keď nemusí ísť o takúto striknú hierarchiu, predsa len možno pozorovať toto odstupňovanie na 'ontogenickej' aj na 'phylogenickej úrovni': vo vývoji jednotlivca od raného detstva, aj vo vývoji ľudstva ako takého. .
  • Avery Dulles a John Polkinghorne

    Stručné profily dvoch významných mysliteľov na rozhraní prírodovedy a teológie. Prvý je na svoj vek neobvykle moderný, pritom ale Rímu lojálny, katolícky teológ (s matematickými kvalifikáciami) kardinál Avery Dulles. Stručný výklad jeho postkritickej teológie. Druhý je teoretický fyzik (kvantová fyzika), teológ a anglikánsky kňaz John Polkinghorn. Stručný výklad jeho prírodovednej interpretáciae božskej kenosis, ktorá dovoľuje svetu, aby sa "sám tvoril".
  • Dva svetonázory

    Svetonázor kresťanský a svetonázor vedecký, oboje chápané v najširšom slova zmysle, nestoja proti sebe, ale môžu byť u veriaceho v rôznom vzájomnom vzťahu. V tomto zmysle rozoznávam tri druhy kresťanského svetonázoru: (i) naivný, kde osobná interpretácia viery ignoruje najnovšie výdobytky (prírodo-)vedy, berie napríklad bibliu doslova; vedecká zložka takéhoto svetnázoru je veľmi chudobná. (ii) otvorený, kde veriaci berie svoju vieru a poznatky vedy ako dve spolu temer nesúvisiace pohľady na svet; takýto dvojkoľajný či rozpoltený svetonázor intelektuálne ochudobňuje jednu i druhú zložku. (iii) integrálny, kde veriaci aktívne čerpá z najnovších poznatkov vedy (príjímaných aj ateistami) aby intelektuálne interpretoval svoju vieru a aktívne čerpá zo svojej viery, aby "oduševnil" mŕtve poznatky, ktoré mu skytá moderná prírodoveda.

Zaujímavá apológia viery od teologického a filozofického znalca, ktorá je myslím na správnej úrovni pre vzdelaného neteológa, obzvlášť ak nemá chuť či čas na Küngovo veľdielo Existiert Gott?: ani príliš banalizujúceho kazateľstva ako u niektorých prác tohoto druhu, ani prílišne abstrakné teologické konštrukcie. .   • Niektoré "teórie všetkého" z kresťanského hľadiska

    Ide tu o viac ako púhu fyzikálnu teóriu vo zmysle Stephen Hawkinga. V práci sa komentujú z kresťanskej perspektívy práce E. O. Wilsona, David Deutscha, Max Tegmarka, Ken Wilbera a predovšetkým James Gardnerova kniha 'Selfish Biocosm Hypothesis '. Garner pojem Boha a priori nezamieta, ale ho zabudoval do svojich naturalistických (biologických) špekulácií, podobne ako to pred ním urobili mnohí s kresťanskou morálkou: Z desatora vynechali transcendentného, osobného Boha, prevzali však jeho podstatnú časť a "zavesili" na ňu všelijaké princípy ako "ľudské práva", "sociálna spravodlivosť" atď. Gardner, robí niečo podobné, pravda nie na etickej ale na ontologickej úrovni. .
  • Vedomie a seba-uvedomenie: kresťanská perspektíva

  • "Science Wars" - polemiky o zmysel prírodných vied

    C. P. Snow vo svojej dnes už klasickej prednáške z roku 1959 hovoril o vzájomnej neinformovanosti odborníkov v prírodných vedách na jednej strane, a vzdelancov, odborníkov v humanitných vedách na strane druhej. Kritizoval hlavne asymetriu tohoto vzťahu: neznalosť základných faktov a pojmov z fyziky a matematiky u humanitných vzdelancov. O žiadnu "vojnu" medzi týmito dvomi "kultúrami" však v jeho časoch nešlo a ani nemohlo ísť. K tomu dochádza až oveľa neskôr, keď na akademický obzor vstupujú nové odbory nazývané culture studies, science studies, ktorých filozofickou základňou a inšpiráciou je postmodernizmus v podaní predovšetkým francúzskych mysliteľov ako Jacques Derrida, Jean-Franćois Lyotard, Michel Foucault, ku ktorým sa radí aj Američan Richard Rorty. Prírodovedci - veriaci aj neveriaci - sa otvorene postavili na obranu vlastne až po Sokalovom husárskom kúsku (Sokal hoax) Rozdiel mezdi metodologickým a kognitívnym relativizmom: prvý je prijateľný, druhý nemá miesto vo filozófii prírodných vied. Je prechod od nevery v Boha k nevere v objektívnu realitu - resp. od teistického agnosticizmu k agnosticizmu ontologickému - akousi historicky-psychologickou nevyhnutnosťou?
  • Duša a posmrtný život

    Vychádzam z dvoch modelov: (i) dualistický, kde duša je chápaná ako čistý duch, teda substancia nielen neviditeľná, ale aj nehmotná, obývajúca naše hmotné telo a po smrti schopná samostatnej existencie bez tela. (ii) vedecký, kde duša je chápaná ako čistá forma, ktorá sama nie je žiadnou substanciou, ale formuje naše vedomie, dnes by sme povedali software (pričom telo je, samozrejme, ten hardware oživovaný softwareom). Takáto duša nie je schopná samostatnej existencie, podobne ako počítačový program nie je k ničomu ak nieto počítača, na ktorom ho možno realizovať. V tomto ponímaní posmrtný život neznamená život holej duše poletujúcej niekde v nehmotnom prázdne, ale vzkriesenie, to jest znovu-realizácia "programu" ktorý predstavuje moje "ja" na inom "počítači",teda novom "oslávenom tele", keď toto moje pozemské a nedokonalé telo už nebude k dispozícii. Tradične kresťanské učenie možno interpretovať nielen z pozície prvého, ale aj z pozície druhého modelu.
  • Zle pochopená biblia

    Polemika s článkom v DER SPIEGEL, ktorý najnovšie výsledky vykopávok vo Svätej zemi komentuje slovami "Rozprávky a monumentálna kamufláž - tak sa nám javí medzitým slovo Božie. Tam kde bádatelia predpokladali historické faktá nachádzajú iba politickú propagandu."
  • Zle pochopená viera

    A critical commentary on the leading article in DER SPIEGEL of 18. May 2002 under the title "Der gedachte Gott - wie Glaube entsteht ". (The thought God - where Faith comes from; c.f. also "Religion and Brain" by S. Begley, NESWEEK, 7th May 2001), A new discipline, called neurotheology, is being introduced, which strives to find out "which neural mechanism is responsible for the belief in God". We argue that all that the neurologists can observe with their electrodes are the biological mechanisms underlying the activities of the brain of a contemplating or meditating mystic or visionary. They cannot and should not make conclusions about whether these activities are pure halucinations or whether they respond to something "out there" which is not amenable to "normal" sensual experience. The same as they could observe and measure the neural activities of a creative artist, scientist or any other thinker, without being able to, and having the right to, decide about the aesthetic or epistemological value of these activities of the creative mind.
